Professor Dinner
FEBRUARY 11, 2019
We were joined by four wonderful professors for a potluck dinner in Storer 2342!
Dr. Joel Ledford (of the Plant Biology department) and Dr. Laci Gerhart Barley (of the Evolution and Ecology department) both specialize in biology education. Dr. Mark Lubell (of the Environmental Science and Policy department) studies the sociology of environmental science. And our very own SEEDS adviser Dr. Jenny Gremer (of the Evolution and Ecology department), studies plant responses to changing environments. Students mingled with faculty, who shared stories about their research, career, and personal lives. It was a really fun night filled with people who are passionate about science and UC Davis!

Cal academy tour
February 18, 2019
About 20 SEEDlingS drove out to San Francisco for a day at the California Academy of the Sciences! Cal Academy is an aquarium/planetarium/natural history museum whose mission is to explore, explain, and sustain life on Earth. We were lucky enough to be given free admission, and a tour by the curator of arachnology, Lauren Esposito. Lauren studies the evolution of venom in scorpions and spiders. She showed us around the Cal Academy collection of natural specimens - a basement with over 36 million individuals preserved! She also told us about her path into science and the work she does now to promote public engagement and minority access in the field. For the last few hours of our stay, we were released into the museum to explore the exhibits. It was an incredible trip, and we thank Lauren for her time and generosity.
